Flash Fiction- Life sure can be a rollercoaster...
This is the first in my series of 'flash fiction'- short stories in the form of approximately 200-300 words.
Life sure can be a rollercoaster...
The feeling of dread and sickness was replaced by a resigned acceptance. This was cemented when the safety belts clicked magnetically into position. Well, there was nothing that could be done now. At least it was a story to tell. It was actually quite refreshing to relinquish control for once- to put your life into the hands of another. This 'another' was an acne ridden 19 year old student who mindlessly pressed 'go' and 'stop' all day long. Well, the film studies degree had to be paid for somehow.
The car cranked its way up the incline, jerking and pulling its way up similar to the motion of an ocean liner. Be under no illusions, it was not smooth. As the car climbed, the tension grew, palms became sweatier, grips tighter, bodies frenzied. We knew the car would make a sudden stopping motion at the top- I had carefully observed this beforehand. All part of the experience. I conned myself that it was actually a good view from up here, but really I questioned whether I would feel the pain if I fell from here, or just die instantly and feel nothing.
We waved frantically to the ants. It was kind of funny how they feigned concern at our plight- waving erratically. I marvelled at their commitment- to keep doing this for hours on end. Were they paid for this? Doubtful. Then they played a big siren right down our ear holes, followed by the predictable cacophony from the people on board- again I was actually impressed at the people down below who joined in with the charade- hands pressed to chubby cheeks supposedly in shock. The car just tipped over the edge, onto the decline when I realised a horrible truth. It wasn't a game. My magnetically reinforced seat belt flung open. It was too late. I swallowed up the track and the world on the way down.
